Hometown Squares
Earlier this year, I got to walk around with my partner, family and friends around their hometown. I also did a bit of wandering around by myself. I made a few images of what I saw, focusing on quiet moments and still places, then arranged as a series of diptychs.
In this project, I’m also exploring the ways in which we describe images, and writing text alternatives that evoke emotion. The text descriptions centre around answering the question “What shall we use to fill the empty spaces, where we used to walk?“ It’s a mix of my day job (web accessibility) and my hobby (photography).
This initial version is digital. I am hoping to create a zine version of it. Each zine will be accompanied by a handmade darkroom print. Get in touch if that sounds interesting :)
A view from the street onto some shops or market. Between the shops, in the distance, stands a chimney.
A bend in the road of a suburban scene. A street light stands tall in the middle of the bend, with a bird sitting on top of it.
The corner of an old brick building, with a tape blocking access to it. In the foreground, the branches of a tree lead up to the house. In the distance, a bright cloud.
An ornate door, looking out of place in the middle of a brick wall. On its left, there is the outline of another, bricked-up door.
The front of a block house, lit by the sun from the left side. Different details are on it; curtains with flower patterns, two plants in front of a window, and a graffity on the lower left edge. In the middle, an open balcony with two crows facing in opposite directions.
A wooden house with a garden leading up to it. In front of the house is a pile of rocks. To the sides stand trees without their leaves. A small bird is sitting on the tree on the right.
A baby stroller stands on a patch of grass, in front of a softly-lit building. The stroller is empty, save for a balloon tied to its front. The balloon seems to be drooping slightly.
A series of mailboxes, in front of a hedge. The boxes seem to be falling apart, with paint scraping off. The boxes lead to, and get lost in the hedge.
A seemingly abandoned two-story building, surrounded by trees. Its ground floor windows are boarded up, and a fence sits around it. Trees and leaves cover the edges of the frame. The light shines diffused yet strong through breaks in the foliage, on the empty space between the fence and fallen leaves.
A pond in the middle of a bog. The pond extends to the sides of the frame on the sides and bottom. To the top, many brightly lit trees. The sky is reflected in the pond; at the top the trees, then some clouds, and at the bottom a dark stillness, a shade or the sky.
A two story house in the distance, with a garden or field leading up to it. The house itself is largely in the shade, but the ones adjacent to it have their windows lit up.
A two story house in the distance, with a long garden or field leading up to it. On the left, a row of tall dark trees. On the right, a smudge or smoke. The house is lit by a distant light.
A small creek runs in the middle of the photo. On the left, a row of tall dark trees. On the right, a single tree with some leaves on it. The image is grainy and moody.
Three trees stand with their bony branches out. They line the horizon, in the shade, as the last light of the day lights the sky behind them. Only their outlines are visible.
